Our story

A quiet obsession with keeping servers alive

Server Home Base exists for the moment your NAS stops behaving and the manual is no help. We turn hard-won fixes into calm, tested guides anyone can follow.

Why this site exists

A home server is one of those things you barely notice until it breaks. It hums away in a cupboard, holding years of photos, backups and media, right up to the evening a drive light turns red or a shared folder simply vanishes. That is usually when people go looking for help, and that is usually when the internet lets them down with vague forum threads and half-answers.

We started Server Home Base to fix that gap. Every guide here begins with the symptom you can actually see, walks through the likely causes in order, and gives you the exact steps to try. No wall of jargon. No assuming you built the machine yourself. Just a clear path from broken to working.

What we cover

The library is organised into six sections, each built around the problems that come up most often for home and small-office setups:

  • NAS Troubleshooting: Your NAS should just work, until the day it does not. This is where we tackle the frustrating stuff: a Synology that…
  • Drives and Storage: Drives are the heart of any NAS, and they are also the part most likely to fail. This section is about disks,…
  • Network and Access: A NAS is only useful when you can actually reach it. This is the section for every connection headache: shared folders that…
  • Backup and Recovery: Storing data on a NAS is not the same as backing it up, and that gap catches people out constantly. This section…
  • Setup and Configuration: Getting a NAS running well is half hardware, half settings, and the settings are where most people get stuck. This section walks…
  • Media and Apps: A modern NAS does far more than store files, and this section is about everything it runs. Think Plex and Jellyfin libraries,…

We write for the popular brands people actually run at home, including Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS, Unraid, ASUSTOR and TerraMaster, plus the wider world of self-hosted apps and containers that turn a NAS into a proper home server.

How we work

Trust is the whole point of a troubleshooting site, so our editorial process is deliberately careful. Guides are drafted from real hands-on troubleshooting, then checked against current vendor documentation before they go live. Where a step carries any risk to your data, we say so plainly and tell you how to protect yourself first.

We update guides as software changes and as readers point out anything that has drifted out of date. A fix that worked two years ago is worthless if the menu has moved, so accuracy is treated as ongoing work, not a one-time job.

What we solve

Boiled down, we help you do four things: understand what your server is telling you, avoid making a bad situation worse, apply the right fix with confidence, and set things up so the same problem is less likely next time. Whether you are staring at a blinking status light or planning a backup routine you can actually trust, the goal is the same, which is to leave you more in control of your own hardware.
