Jellyfin vs Plex on a NAS: Which to Run

A hands-on comparison of transcoding, apps, cost, and setup so you pick the right home media server before sinking a weekend into either one.

My first real media server was a Synology DS220+ tucked behind the TV, and I burned an entire Saturday installing Plex, ripping it out, installing Jellyfin, then crawling back to Plex. That flip-flop cost me hours I will never get back.

So let me save you the same mistake.

Both of these will happily stream your movies and shows off a NAS to a phone, a laptop, or a living-room TV. But they behave very differently the moment you push them past the easy stuff, and the right pick depends almost entirely on your hardware and how much fiddling you enjoy.

Plex is the polished, hands-off option that mostly configures itself and looks great on every device. Jellyfin is the free, no-strings option that gives you everything but asks you to do a little more work.

Transcoding is where the decision usually gets made

Transcoding is the NAS re-encoding a video on the fly because the client cannot play the original file. It is the single most CPU-hungry thing your server does, and it is where cheap NAS boxes fall over.

Here is the catch that trips people up. Plex locks hardware transcoding behind Plex Pass. Without it, Plex uses your CPU, and a two-bay ARM NAS will choke on a single 4K stream and buffer forever.

Jellyfin gives you hardware transcoding for free. If your NAS has an Intel chip with Quick Sync (most Celeron and Pentium based Synology and QNAP units from the last few years), Jellyfin will offload the work to the iGPU and stream smoothly without you paying a cent.

The first time I enabled Quick Sync in Jellyfin on a DS920+, a 4K HDR file that was pinning the CPU at 100 percent dropped to about 15 percent. Night and day.

Client apps: the quiet reason people stay on Plex

This is the part nobody warns you about. Plex has native, well-maintained apps on almost everything: Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Xbox, PlayStation, plus phones and browsers.

Jellyfin's app coverage is good and growing, but it is thinner. There are solid apps for Android, Android TV, and the web, and excellent third-party clients like Findroid and Streamyfin. On older Samsung or LG TVs though, you may be stuck sideloading or leaning on a browser.

A mistake I see constantly: someone picks Jellyfin for the free transcoding, then discovers their five-year-old LG TV has no first-class app. Check your actual devices first.

What setup actually feels like

Both install as a package or a Docker container on any modern NAS. Synology and QNAP both list Plex in their app centers, and Docker makes Jellyfin a one-file affair if you prefer containers.

Plex holds your hand. You sign in, point it at your folders, and it fetches posters, summaries, and cast info automatically. Fifteen minutes and you are watching.

Jellyfin asks a bit more. You create a local admin account, add libraries, and for hardware transcoding you manually enable the right acceleration (VA-API or Quick Sync) and sometimes pass the GPU device into the container. It is not hard, but it is not one-click either.

The remote-access wrinkle

Plex offers remote streaming out of the box through its relay servers, so you can watch from a friend's house with no router config. It is not the fastest path, but it works with zero effort.

Jellyfin expects you to handle remote access yourself: a reverse proxy, a Tailscale tunnel, or port forwarding. If you are comfortable with a bit of networking, it is fine. If the phrase reverse proxy makes you nervous, that is a real point for Plex.

Cost, honestly

Jellyfin is free forever, top to bottom. No account, no subscription, no upsell.

Plex is free for basic local streaming, but the features people actually want (hardware transcoding, mobile downloads, skip-intro) sit behind Plex Pass. That is roughly $5 a month, or a $120 one-time lifetime license.

If you plan to keep a server running for years, the lifetime pass is the sane buy, and it goes on sale a couple of times a year for closer to $70 to $90. Still, $120 versus $0 is a genuine difference, especially if free hardware transcoding is the whole reason you are shopping.

Who should pick which

Reach for Plex if you value polish over control, watch on a pile of different TVs and consoles, want remote access to just work, and do not mind paying once for the good stuff. It is the lowest-friction path to a media server that your family will not complain about.

Reach for Jellyfin if you have an Intel NAS with Quick Sync, you want free hardware transcoding, you care about keeping everything self-hosted and private, and you are comfortable doing a little networking. You give up some app polish and gain full ownership.

Here is the short decision list I give people:

  • Mostly Apple TV or Roku, hate fiddling, happy to pay once: Plex.
  • Intel NAS, want free 4K transcoding, fine with some setup: Jellyfin.
  • Older smart TVs with no good app options: lean Plex.

My honest take after running both

I run Jellyfin at home now because my NAS has Quick Sync and I refuse to pay a subscription for something my own box can already do. It has been rock solid for over a year.

But I still set up Plex for my parents, because they watch on an ancient Samsung TV and a Roku, and the last thing I want is a support call about sideloading an app. Different needs, different answer.

Pick based on your hardware and your screens, not on which one has louder fans online. Do that and you will only spend one weekend on this instead of two.
