QNAP Beeping Alarm Codes and What They Mean

Do not ignore this one. Sustained heat is the fastest way to shorten the life of your drives.

  • Feel the airflow at the rear fan. If it is weak or silent, the fan bearing may be failing.
  • Check the temperature reading in QTS. Anything above 55C for the system or 50C for the drives deserves action.
  • Make sure the NAS is not boxed into a cabinet or pushed against a wall. I have seen a TS-251D beep for weeks purely because it sat two inches from a radiator.

A replacement 92mm or 120mm fan for most tower QNAPs runs 12 to 25 dollars, and swapping one is a ten minute job with a single screwdriver.

4. Two long beeps: a serious hardware fault

Before you replace anything, confirm which bay is the problem. QTS shows the exact disk in Storage & Snapshots, and the physical bay LED will be lit. Do not guess from the beep alone.

Replacing a failed drive the safe way

Match the replacement to your existing drives in capacity or larger, ideally a NAS-rated model like a WD Red Plus or Seagate IronWolf. Slot it into the same bay the failed disk came from, and QTS will offer to rebuild the array automatically. On a 4-bay unit with 4TB drives, a rebuild typically takes 6 to 12 hours.

How to silence the buzzer without ignoring the problem

Sometimes you just need the noise to stop so you can think. QTS lets you mute the current alarm without disabling future warnings.

  1. Log into QTS in your browser.
  2. Open Control Panel > System > Hardware.
  3. Find the Buzzer section and click to silence the active alarm, or uncheck the events you no longer want to hear.
